Wine Cellar Cooling Systems: Maintain the Temperature Inside Your Wine Cellar

A balance of temperature and humidity is critical for properly storing and aging wine. Temperature affects the maturation rate, while the right humidity keeps corks in good shape. Excess moisture can lead to mold or fungal contaminations, while a room that is too dry can cause corks to shrink, leading to the oxidization of wine. You can protect your investment by providing the ideal environment with a state-of-the-art Wine-Mate wine cellar refrigeration system. Select from self-contained, split or ducted cooling systems designed specifically for proper wine storage.

Wine-Mate cooling units are proudly designed and assembled in the USA in our Henderson, NV, facility.

What is a Cellar Cooling System?

Wine cellar cooling systems are specialized air conditioners designed for wine cellars. Cellar cooling systems consist of an evaporator coil to cool the air and a condenser as well as a condenser coil that uses a compressor to remove the heat in the room. Each cooling system can be programmed to operate within a set temperature range, turning on when the room is too warm and turning off when it is too low. The hot air is exchanged for cool air, allowing the wine to age gracefully at the proper temperature.

Why Do I Need a Cellar Cooling System?

Cellar cooling systems benefit your wine collection in numerous ways. When used in conjunction with a properly insulated cellar or cabinet, cellar cooling units create the ideal storage conditions for wine by maintaining a consistent temperature. Cooling systems can also help to maintain humidity within an ideal range, preventing the corks of the wine bottles from drying out. In this ideal environment, wine ages gracefully and will develop the flavors and aromas intended by the winemaker. In other words, a cellar cooling system will protect your investment and make your wine taste delicious once uncorked.

Cellar Cooling System vs. Air Conditioners

Some cellar owners have asked if they can use a standard air conditioner or window unit in their wine cellar, but this is not recommended for a few reasons. Air conditioners cannot maintain humidity, leading to a dry environment where the corks of the wine bottles can dry out, causing oxidization. Additionally, most air conditioners cannot reach the desired temperature for wine, around 55 degrees Fahrenheit. Air conditioners are designed to rapidly cool a room, perfect for a hot summer day but bad for wine that does not like temperature fluctuations. When planning your wine cellar, invest in a cellar cooling system and do not give in to the temptation of buying a standard air conditioner.

Can You Use a Cellar Cooling System for Beer?

Beer lovers will be happy to learn that you can use a wine cooling system for beer storage. Like wine, beer prefers cool temperatures, darkness, and humidity. Beer can be housed in a wine cellar where the temperature is consistently between 50 to 55 degrees Fahrenheit. Other goods that can benefit from cellar cooling units include olive oil, meat, cheese, chocolate, cigars, and chocolate.

What is a Split Cooling System

Wine-Mate’s Split Cooling Units are known for their efficiency and longevity. Each unit is designed to maintain a consistent temperature and humidity in spaces where proper ventilation is not feasible. The evaporator is installed inside and the condensing unit can be placed as far as 75 feet away. Since it exhausts outside, split cooling systems operate quietly and reduce vibration inside the cellar, which is believed to negatively affect the quality of wine. Here are some of the additional features:

    • Multiple options of air-cooled or water-cooled condensing unit can suit various applications
    • Sleek design keeps the unit relatively hidden inside a wine cellar or cabinet
    • Can be ceiling mounted, rack mounted, or floor mounted
    • Maintains the ideal environment for long-term wine storage
    • Optional low ambient kit, temperature control panel with heating function, wine bottle probe, and digital controller

Ducted systems also produce the least amount of vibrations making them the safest and quietest choice for your wine cellar. Here are some of the additional benefits:

    • Sleek design keeps the unit relatively hidden and allows for flexibility of installation
    • Multiple options of split or package ducted cooling systems can suit various applications
    • Select units have a coverage size up to 3300 cubic feet
    • Optional low ambient kit, temperature control panel with heating function, wine bottle probe, and digital controller
